Core Concepts

What every 8th grader needs to master

Slope-Intercept Form

y = mx + b

  • m is slope (rise/run).
  • b is the y-intercept (where x = 0).
  • Positive slope goes up to the right; negative goes down.

Point-Slope Form

y - y₁ = m(x - x₁)

  • Use it when you know one point and the slope.
  • Substitute values for m, x₁, and y₁.
  • Simplify to slope-intercept form to graph quickly.

Graphing Lines Fast

  • Plot the y-intercept first at (0, b).
  • Use slope as rise/run to get another point.
  • Draw a straight line through both points.
